• Helmet: A welding helmet is perhaps the most critical piece of PPE for welders. It provides protection against intense light and radiation produced during welding. Welding helmets feature a shaded lens (usually made of tinted glass or auto-darkening filters) that protects the eyes from harmful UV and IR radiation emitted by the welding arc. Modern welding helmets often include adjustable settings, such as shade level and sensitivity, to accommodate different welding processes and environments.
• Gloves: Welding gloves are designed to protect the hands from heat, sparks, and molten metal splatter generated during welding. These gloves are typically made of heat-resistant materials such as leather, Kevlar, or aluminized fabric to provide insulation and dexterity while handling hot materials and welding equipment.
• Jacket or Apron: A welding jacket or apron shields the upper body and torso from sparks, heat, and UV radiation during welding. These garments are made of flame-resistant materials such as leather or cotton treated with flame-retardant coatings. Welding jackets often feature long sleeves, high collars, and snap closures to provide full coverage and protection.
• Respirator: A welding respirator is used to protect the respiratory system from welding fumes, gases, and airborne contaminants. These respirators may include disposable filtering facepiece respirators (FFP), half-face or full-face respirators with replaceable filters, or powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR) equipped with integrated filters and airflow systems. Respirators must be selected based on the type of welding process and the specific hazards present in the work environment.
• Boots: Welding boots provide protection for the feet and ankles from sparks, hot metal, and falling objects in the welding area. These boots are made of durable, heat-resistant materials such as leather with reinforced toes and soles to withstand the hazards of the welding environment. Welding boots should also provide good traction and support to prevent slips and falls on slick surfaces.
• Goggles or Safety Glasses: In addition to a welding helmet, welders may wear welding goggles or safety glasses with shaded lenses to provide additional eye protection during welding setup, inspection, or grinding operations. These goggles or glasses should meet ANSI Z87.1 standards for impact resistance and UV protection.
• Ear Protection: Welding can produce high levels of noise, especially in industrial settings with multiple welding operations occurring simultaneously. Earplugs or earmuffs should be worn to protect against noise-induced hearing loss. Ear protection devices should have a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) appropriate for the noise level present in the work environment.
• Other Accessories: Additional PPE may include welding caps to protect the head and hair from sparks and heat, welding sleeves to shield the arms from burns and UV radiation, and leather spats to cover the tops of the boots and prevent sparks from entering.

Proper selection and use of welding PPE are essential for ensuring the safety and health of welders in the workplace. Employers should provide comprehensive training on PPE use, maintenance, and inspection to minimize the risk of injuries and ensure compliance with safety regulations and standards.
